Historic brownstones and high-end shopping, quintessential Boston

Back Bay at a Glance

Back Bay has come a long way from its swampy beginnings. Once a tidal bay, the city undertook a massive filling project to reclaim this boggy area in the early part of the 19th-century. Instead of marshland, you’ll now find rows of Victorian brownstones lining some of the trendiest streets in Boston. Only steps to hip restaurants and shopping hotspots, this neighborhood gives access to the very best of the city.

Back Bay makes it mark on Boston’s skyline with a pair of skyscrapers, the Prudential Center and John Hancock Tower. Both Newbury Street and Boylston Street are chock-full of restaurants and shopping. Catch a dose of green space along Commonwealth Avenue, bounded on its eastern border by Boston Public Garden. On the other side of Boston Public Garden, is the expansive Boston Common and historic, Beacon Hill. Or head north for some fresh air along the Charles River Esplanade. Hop on the subway to nearby Fenway / Kenmore on the Green line with stops at Arlington, Copley, Hynes Convention Ctr, Prudential. Head to Back Bay's southern neighbor, the South End, for some of the best restaurants in the city. You'll also find the Orange line, at Back Bay station, connecting you to Downtown Boston.
