SOUR Studio — Member Health & Safety Policy

Oct 6, 2026 · @Inanc

1. Purpose and scope

Everyone working in the SOUR studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yard follows this policy, whether they book through LiquidSpace or directly. It covers desk members, private-office members, day-pass users, and any guests they bring.

The policy sets the minimum standard for keeping the space safe. It sits alongside the Desk Rental Agreement, the LiquidSpace Terms of Service, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) building rules, and NYC Fire Code. Where those are stricter, they apply.

Every member reads and signs this policy before their first day. It is reviewed at least once a year and after any incident.

2. Roles and responsibilities

Who Responsible for

SOUR (host) Keeping the space, fire equipment and first aid kit in working order; inducting new members; posting emergency info; keeping equipment maintained; logging and following up incidents

Studio safety lead (Inanc Eray) First point of contact for safety questions; monthly walk-through; checks extinguishers, first aid kit and exits; equipment sign-offs

Members Following this policy; using only equipment they are signed off on; keeping their area tidy; reporting hazards, near-misses and incidents the same day

Guests Following member instructions and this policy; staying with their host member at all times

Members are responsible for their guests' conduct and safety. Members who work alone or after hours take extra care, as described in section 3.

3. Access, security and working alone

Access is personal: each member gets their own door code, and codes are never shared. Members enter the Yard on a guest basis until their Navy Yard ID is issued after the first month, and must follow BNYDC security procedures at the gate.

• Close and lock the studio door behind you; never prop it open.

• Guests must be signed in by their host member and accompanied at all times. Maximum two guests per member at once unless agreed in advance.

• No guests in the studio between 7pm and 7am.

• An Arlo security camera system operates in the space. Footage is used only for security and incident review.

• Report lost codes, suspicious people or forced entry to SOUR immediately so codes can be changed.

Working alone or after hours. The studio is open 24/7, but tell someone where you are when working late. No use of the laser cutter, cutting tools or hot tools when alone in the studio after hours. The last person out checks that equipment is off, windows are closed and the door is locked.

4. Emergencies, first aid and incident reporting

In any emergency, call 911 first, then BNYDC Security, then SOUR. Emergency numbers, the floor plan with exits, and the assembly point are posted by the studio door.

Fire and evacuation

1. Raise the alarm and call 911.

2. Use an extinguisher only on a small fire with a clear exit behind you.

3. Leave by the nearest exit using the stairs, never the elevator.

4. Go to the assembly point and tell SOUR or Yard security who was in the studio.

5. Do not re-enter until the FDNY or building management says it is safe.

Members learn the location of exits, extinguishers, the first aid kit and the building fire alarm pull station during induction. Exits, corridors and extinguishers must be kept clear at all times.

First aid. The first aid kit is kept in the closet with the mirror. Tell SOUR when you use anything so it can be restocked. Members with first aid training are encouraged to let SOUR know.

Reporting. Report every injury, near-miss, equipment fault, damage or security issue to SOUR the same day, by message or the incident form. SOUR logs it, follows up within 48 hours, and informs LiquidSpace, BNYDC or insurers where required. Faulty equipment is tagged out of use until repaired.

5. Equipment and workshop safety

Shared equipment may be used only after a SOUR sign-off for that machine. Sign-offs are recorded and can be withdrawn after unsafe use.

Equipment Key rules

Laser cutter Never leave it running unattended, even briefly. Approved materials only (section 6). Ventilation/exhaust on before every job. Lid closed while firing. CO2 extinguisher within reach. Clean the tray of scraps after use. Stop and report any flare-up.

3D printer Use the approved filaments only. Do not leave long prints running when the studio is empty unless SOUR has agreed. Let the nozzle and bed cool before touching.

Plotter and printer Clear paper jams with the machine off. Report faults rather than opening internal panels.

Model-making table All cutting happens here, nowhere else. Cut away from your body on a cutting mat with a metal ruler. Snap off and dispose of used blades in the sharps container. Retract blades when not in use.

Hot tools (glue guns, hot-wire cutters) Use on a heat-proof surface. Unplug immediately after use. Hot-wire foam cutting only with ventilation on.

Personal power tools, saws and grinders are not allowed in the studio without written approval from SOUR. Wear safety glasses where a task can throw debris, and tie back long hair and loose clothing near moving or hot parts.

6. Materials, chemicals and prohibited items

The studio has no in-room sink and limited ventilation, so the rule is simple: if it sprays, fumes or needs washing out, it does not happen here.

Not permitted in the studio

• Spray adhesives, spray paint, aerosol fixatives and solvents

• Flammable liquids beyond small personal quantities of approved glues

• Open flames, candles, incense, smoking and vaping

• Space heaters, hot plates and other personal heating or cooking appliances

• Weapons, illegal substances, and pets unless agreed in advance

Laser cutter materials. Allowed: plywood, MDF, solid wood, cardboard, paper, cast acrylic and approved foam board. Never cut PVC, vinyl, polycarbonate, ABS, coated or unknown plastics, or anything containing chlorine, because they release toxic gases or catch fire. If you don't know what a material is, don't cut it.

Storage and waste. Keep glues and small chemical supplies sealed, labelled and stored in the designated cabinet. Blades go in the sharps container. Offcuts and recyclable material go in the marked bins, and oily or solvent-soaked rags are not to be left in the studio. Use the floor sink for any washing up and leave it clean.

7. Workspace, electrical and conduct

Housekeeping. Keep your desk, the floor around it and walkways clear of bags, cables and materials. Clean up spills straight away and report wet floors. Leave the lounge and kitchen area as you found them.

Electrical. Use only equipment in good condition, with no damaged cords or plugs. No daisy-chained power strips or extension leads run across walkways. Personal devices with heating elements need SOUR approval.

Ergonomics. Set up your chair, screen and keyboard to avoid strain, and ask SOUR if you need an adjustment. Lift heavy model boards or boxes with help.

Health and wellbeing. Stay home if you have a contagious illness. Tell SOUR about any allergy or condition that could affect your safety in an emergency, if you're comfortable doing so; it's kept confidential.

Conduct. Treat everyone with respect. Harassment, discrimination, intoxication on the premises, and behaviour that endangers others are not tolerated. Keep calls and noise considerate in a shared studio.

8. Insurance, accessibility, enforcement and acknowledgement

Insurance and liability. Members are responsible for their own belongings, equipment and professional work, and are encouraged to carry their own general liability and contents insurance. Members using the laser cutter or other shop equipment may be asked to show proof of liability cover. Members are liable for damage caused by misuse of equipment or breach of this policy.

Accessibility. SOUR will discuss reasonable adjustments with any member who needs them, including evacuation assistance. Members who may need help evacuating should tell SOUR so a personal plan can be agreed.

Enforcement. A first breach gets a verbal or written reminder. Repeated or serious breaches, such as unattended laser use, banned materials or shared codes, can lead to loss of equipment access, removal of guest privileges, or termination of membership under the Desk Rental Agreement and LiquidSpace terms.
