Hoodies and company swag epitomize the tech hub of the city

SoMa at a Glance

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. SoMa has figured out how to avoid the formula. This lively neighborhood is where tech companies go to enjoy a healthy mix of work and play. This large neighborhood expanding from the Bay to Civic Center with Market Street as its northern border has many areas still to be developed. The streets around the Giants Ballpark have most of the developed buildings with restaurants and shops. As you continue west the development becomes more sparse, but those who search will be certain to find hidden gems throughout.

The major characteristic that defines SOMA is the fact that it is South of Market Street. This expansive neighborhood stretches from the Embarcadero to Van Ness Street with distinct areas in between. SOMA's tech scene has become synonymous with start-ups. 2nd Street along Howard Street, Bryant Street and Brannan have become a real hub for start-ups. Old warehouse spaces are quickly converted into open concept office space with room for kegerators and ping-pong tables, of course. Busy tech workers in their company swag take a break from work at South Park, grab lunch at a local café or a beer at the 21st Amendment Brewery. AT&T Park is close by, so Giants fans descend on SOMA come game day. If you head west along Market Street, you can enjoy culture and shopping at the Westfield Mall, Metreon, SF MOMA and Yerba Buena Center. The Moscone Center is centrally located in SOMA for large conventions. SOMA is surrounded by public transportation with MUNI running along Market and Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell and Civic Center BART stops to the north and Caltrain and MUNI to the South.
